Don is an experienced leader. Because he has served in a wide variety of professional and volunteer positions, he knows how this community works.
- EXECUTIVE ASSISTANT TO THE MAYOR. Served as an Executive Assistant to Mayor Alan Arakawa (2003-2005) where he focused primarily on issues affecting South and West Maui and helped lead the community to solutions on a host of issues.
- DEPUTY PLANNING DIRECTOR. Served as second in-charge of the County Planning Department as it was preparing the County’s huge General Planning effort. (2006). The next County Council will decide what that plan will ultimately look like. A strong planning background will be essential
- TELEVISION AND RADIO COMMENTATOR. Don continues to serve the community through his informative radio and television shows. Because he deals with the concerns affecting Maui County first hand, he knows the ins and outs of County government.
- BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF MAUI. Served as chair and member of the board of this important community social asset for nearly a decade. He is dedicated to the premise that providing a proper, interesting and fun environment and strong adult guidance to adolescents is key to creating good, contributing citizens.
- KIHEI COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION. Don believes in giving back to the community where he lives, which for the last two decades has been mainly Kihei. He does that by serving on the Board of Directors of the KCA.
- COUNTY BOARD OF ETHICS. Don believes that a public official who lacks integrity and the trust of the community should not be allowed to serve. For four years he served on the County Boards of Ethics, including two years as its Chair. The County Code of Ethics is the County’s chief protection against public corruption and Don is dedicated to protecting its principles.
- AKAKU: MAUI COMMUNITY TELEVISION. Don is one of the founding members of the Maui community television network and currently serves on its board. He strongly believes in the public’s right to know about its government and the issues affecting the broader community.
